"That concert was awesome!" Jo screamed, her ears were still
ringing from the loud music. She had just been to her first Backstreet Boys
concert and she and Cassie had had front row seats.
"I know!" Cassie screamed back.
"Come on, lets go meet Howie backstage!" Jo shouted. Cassie nodded and
pulled off Jo’s pass from around her neck. She handed it to Jo and Jo put it
on.
They proceeded to a gate that said, "BACKSTAGE." They flashed the
guard their passes and they were let backstage. Cassie found the pool table room
and her and Jo went in and sat on the pool table.
"Hey, what are you two doing in here?" AJ McLean asked as he walked
into the room and grabbed a jimmy stick.
"Howie told us to meet him here. Wanna play a quick game before he gets
here?" Cassandra offered.
"I’d love to. I’m AJ McLean, and you are…"
"Cassandra Bera. This is my best friend, and I think Howie’s sister,
Josephine Avia."
"Howie’s sister? Another one? Whoa! Okay. Since I’m the greatest player
alive. You can break Cassandra," AJ racked up the balls and sat on the edge
of the table.
Cassie lightly tapped the cue ball and broke the triangle of balls. She sunk a
solid, red ball in the corner pocket. Then Howie walked into the room and Cassie
and AJ stopped playing.
"Well, that was a short game. I’ll call ya later if you give me your
number," AJ grinned at Cassie. Cassie jotted down her number on a pink
piece of paper from her purse and handed it to AJ. AJ smiled, put it in his
pocket, and left the room.
"Looks like AJ’s got a little crush," Howie observed after AJ left.
Cassie blushed and turned her back to Howie. Howie noticed that Cassie was
embarrassed and changed the subject, "Lets get this all straightened out.
Hang here and I’ll go get my mom from the green room."
Howie left and returned with his mother.
"Does someone want to explain what this is about?" Mrs. Dorough asked.
"I will. I’m Josephine Avia. My friend here, Cassandra Bera, thinks that
I’m Howie’s fraternal twin. You see, we have the same birthday, we’re from
the same city, and we look alike. I think Cassie is crazy, but she thinks
she’s right. What’s your opinion?" Joey asked with hopeful eyes. She
wanted to know the truth.
"Ohmigod! I knew this day would come someday," Mrs. Dorough said
quietly, bringing her hand to her mouth in disbelief.
"What are you saying Mom?" Howie asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Howie, I never told you this, but I had twins. Your father and I didn’t
have enough money or time for two babies at once. Your father took your sister,
that’d be you Josephine, and left her on Rose and Marshal Avia’s doorstep.
He knew they couldn’t have a child and that they wanted one. He figured it’d
be a good idea. Howie, Josephine, you two are siblings," Mrs. Dorough
clarified.
The room was in a deafening silence. Howie and Jo just looked at each other in
shock. Cassie looked at Jo with victory written all over her face. Mrs. Dorough
looked at both of her children. Finally the silence was broken by Howie and Jo
at once, "Wow."
"Well…um…I guess I should call my mom…um…Mrs. Avia…and
explain," Jo said, while pulling a cell phone from her purse. She walked
out of the room and stood in the hallway.
"Hello?" Rose answered the phone
"Mom, um, Rose?" Joey asked awkwardly.
"Why did you just call me Rose?"
"Rose, I just found my real mother," Josephine said slowly.
"You found Mrs. Dorough, huh?"
"You knew?" Jo asked in pure surprise.
"Yeah, but we had already had you for quite some time and we wanted to keep
you here because it was familiar to you. We didn’t want you to have to get
used to another family at the age of 10," Rose explained.
"Okay, I get what you’re saying. Well, Cassie and I are probably going to
stay with my brother, Howie, tonight. I’ll see you tomorrow," Jo said and
then hung up the phone. She walked into the room and hugged both Howie and her
mother.
